Sheffield Softball started in 2001, and has been growing ever since. We are
currently the only softball club in Sheffield but we hope to build up the
numbers and eventually have several teams. The Sheffield Sting team plays in the
East Midlands Softball League on (some) Sundays from April to July and goes to
tournaments around the country all through the summer. You can also just come
along and play for fun during the week or on Sundays when we don't have matches.
Come and join us! *No Experience Necessary*. You can join the team and take it
seriously (sort of) or just play for fun. We have spare gloves, bats etc so you
don't need any equipment, just a sense of humour and a bit of enthusiasm.
NEWS
- Sting had their best ever tournament in the history of the team, at Manchester on 9-10 August 2008, where again despite adverse weather conditions (I think there is a theme developing here), they went unbeaten for the entire weekend and fought off the More Lions in the final to take the Rec competition trophy! The Sting were absolutely awesome all weekend, scoring a total of 60 runs in their first 3 games alone, and a total of 104 runs over the whole weekend of 7 games.
- Sting won the Plate competition at the Leeds tournament on 21-22 June 2008! Despite even more adverse weather conditions than the Mets tournament (constant rain on the Saturday and gale force winds on the Sunday) they fought off opposition from Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham to beat the Manchester Mets in the final and take the trophy.
In summer we generally play on
Thursday evenings 6.30pm, and on Sundays at 3pm when we don't have league games
or tournaments. We generally train at Don Valley Bowl, just outside Ice Sheffield, on Thursdays, and on Bole Hills Recreation Ground in Crookes on Sundays. It's always best to contact
one of us and check though. Please check the mailing list (if you are
subscribed) or contact us at sheffieldsoftball@hotpop.com.
- The Beehive (Attercliffe): this is our home ground
- By car: Follow the directions as for Don Valley Bowl but continue along
Coleridge Road instead of turning into the Ice Sheffield car park. Go over a
bridge (over the tram line), through a very dodgy looking area, and just as the road bends sharply round to the
right, the ground is on your left.
- By tram: The tram stop is Don Valley Stadium. Exit the tram stop through
the gates to the left (not the exit towards Ice Sheffield) and you'll find
yourself on Coleridge Road. Turn left down Coleridge Road, over the bridge, and
follow the directions as for cars. It's about a 5 minute walk from the tram
stop.

This is our training ground.

By tram: The tram stop is Don Valley Stadium. As you come out of the tram,
follow anyone with ice skates, as it's right outside Ice Sheffield! Go through
the gate, you'll see a large grass field directly in front of you with a path on
the left. That's it. There may be people marching around with flags and playing
music on one part of the pitch (our unofficial support band, though they don't
know it).
- By car: Follow the Attercliffe road and follow the signs to Ice Sheffield (off Coleridge Road), turn in
and park in their car park and it's the piece of land at the front of the
building (as before).

We sometimes train here too, though it's a bit hilly!
Softball is a great game. It's played by both men and women, equipment
costs are minimal and the playing facilities can be easily adapted
from existing football and recreational fields. The sport is in constant development and is currently played competitively in over 120
countries.
The International Softball Federation has conducted World
Championships since 1965 for men, women, junior boys and junior
girls. Softball is among the fastest growing sports internationally.
Right now, there are over:
- 40 million athletes participate in our sport today
- 22.5 million women worldwide playing softball
- 120 countries in which softball is played
It's a bit cold, wet and dark for most people to play softball in winter in
this country, but if you fancy either learning to play for the first time, or
keeping up your softball skills over the winter, or just want to do something
energetic on a Sunday afternoon, why not join us in Manchester for indoor softball?
There's usually a few of us heading over to Manchester on a Sunday. We leave at
about 1.30pm and are back in Sheffield by about 8pm. The indoor softball is run
on a turn-up-and-play basis. If you turn up, you get to play in a random team
against whoever else is there. The sessions take place at the Dome in Platt
Fields, Rusholme, from 3-5pm most Sundays, and cost a measly £4 per person.
Lots of fun, and it doesn't matter whether you're a complete rookie or if you've
been playing for 20+ years. We usually go for a drink or two afterwards before
heading back. The rules are a little bit different from outdoor softball -- see the MSL website for more
information. If you want to join us, send an email to the mailing list or to sheffieldsoftball@hotpop.com and
we'll let you know the arrangements for that week.
